The Pontiac Firebird is an American automobile that was produced by Pontiac from the 1967 to 2002 model years. It was designed as a pony car to compete with the Ford Mustang and was introduced on February 23, 1967, five months after GM's Chevrolet division launched the platform-sharing Camaro. This release coincided with the introduction of the 1967 Mercury Cougar, which was Ford's upscale, platform-sharing version of the Mustang. Additionally, the name "Firebird" had been previously used by General Motors for the Firebird series of concept cars in the 1950s.
